Update 9/2017: As I have moved out of state, we are now actively transitioning our events and programs to a new program coordinator! Thank you for your patience, and please stay on our email list for updates! Best, Diana Chia
Mission Statement: To connect neighbors, with and without shelter, through local advocacy and the craft of knitting.
The Beginnings: I first learned how to knit from my grandmother, but it was the help of some very talented friends that got me going last year!
The Inspiration: Cold nights walking home and seeing some of the same individuals sleeping outside. The lessons learned on a recent medical mission trip to Haiti about balancing systemic changes with simple relief work to reduce suffering and provide a bit of comfort to those in need.
The Facts: The Baltimore City Homeless Point-in-Time Census Counts indicate steady rates of homelessness, with continued shortages of shelter space, barriers to stable housing, lack of employment opportunities, and other obstacles. On any given night, there is an estimated number of 3,000 people, with anywhere between 10-40% unsheltered. Approximately 77% of them are men, 23% are women. Most are single adults.
The Plan: Casual knitting sessions for all levels, including newbies. Hats, scarves, and mittens will be made! RSVP for the next session under Events.
The Goal: Hats, scarves, and mittens for those in need. Pointed discussions about homelessness in Baltimore City. No longer thinking of individuals experiencing homelessness as "others" but as what they are...our neighbors.
UPDATE: Currently 23 hats, 4 scarves, 4 pairs of mittens (as of May 2015).
The Winter 2015-2016 goal is 200 hats, 25 scarves, and 25 mittens!
